My research activity  focuses on the assessment of  distribution and persistence of organic pollutants in soil and water ecosystems, especially anionic surfactants, pharmaceutical residues and antibiotics.

The aim of my PhD project is to evaluate the role of natural microbial communities in the removal of selected organic contaminants. For this purpose, I gained experience insetting up of microcosm experiments  with soil or water samples treated with the xenobiotics (i.e anionic surfactant and antibiotic) studied. At selected times soil or water samples were collected for assessing the microbiological and chemical analysis as follows:

  • Microbiological analysis: epifluorescence microscopy methods for determining microbial phylogenetic characterization by the Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) method, microbial abundance by DAPI counts, microbial viability by the Live/Dead method. Measure of the microbial dehydrogenase activity (DHA).Real-time PCR analysis, DNA extraction, performing bacterial evolution experiments.
  • Chemical analysis: extraction and purification of organic pollutants from solid matrices (sediments, soils, biota) by ASE (Accelerated Solvent Extraction); Extraction and purification of organic pollutants from liquid matrices by SPE (Solid Phase Extraction); Liquid-liquid extraction using a separating funnel. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) coupled with fluorescence (FL) and (UV) detectors.
